DESCRIPTION:
Bellingham Technical College invites applications for an exempt (non-represented) position as Completion Coach for its Title III Cooperative Arrangement Development (CAD) grant project. This is a full-time assignment. This position is anticipated to begin September 4, 2019 and is scheduled to end September 30, 2020. This position will report to the STAR Completion Coach Manager. This position is grant-funded, FLSA and union exempt, and an at-will position.
The Coach will provide coaching services to students in the STAR (Student success, Tutoring, Academic support, Resources) program. This position will be primarily responsible for providing coaching (including advising) services around academic, personal and career success, and working collaboratively with Title III CAD program tutors and mentors, among other essential duties.
The federal Title III grant program helps the college provide intensive support services for disadvantaged students, including those who are low-income, first-generation, students of color, students with disabilities, and students who are academically under-prepared for college-level coursework. BTC has established a Title III CAD program intervention (STAR) that provides much needed and effective resources and services to students who are at risk of dropping out. Services the program provides to Title III CAD project participants include: intensive coaching, advising, peer mentoring services, and specialized precollege math support; enrollment in dedicated academic support, and college success coursework; participation in leadership development activities, cultural and educational opportunities, and an online social networking program; and a summer bridge/ orientation program, which will incorporate early assessment of student skill and ability levels and individualized success plan development.
POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Support the Title III CAD (STAR) program intervention by providing thorough, proactive coaching services to maximize persistence of students in their chosen program of study and helping them become engaged in the educational environment;
• Help students create Student Action Plan where students leave a coaching session with clear next steps that promote individual student success;
• Monitor student academic progress and intervene with students in academic jeopardy by assisting them to make appropriate decisions and persist toward their academic goals;
• Maintain on-going, positive relationships with faculty, administrators and staff to facilitate interdepartmental cooperation and program success;
• Participate in Coach Training;
• Assist with annual Coach Training to train additional coaches to scale up BTC's coaching practice;
• Collaborate with Whatcom Community College's coaching staff, share best practices and lessons learned on a regular basis;
• Coordinate activities for new program participants. Programming includes but is not limited to an introduction to the program, study skills, career exploration and workshops, and leadership development;
• Develop, lead, or coordinate workshops, educational programs and engagement initiatives for the Title III CAD program;
• Cultivate and maintain contact with appropriate staff at baccalaureate-awarding institutions of higher education to facilitate information-sharing and conduct student activities focused on transfer;
• Collaborate closely with other staff members to assess progress towards and achieve project goals and objectives;
• Help develop STAR recruitment plans and activities;
• Maintain data records in accordance with grant requirements and complete requested reports that include statistics on services provided;
• Provide referrals to BTC faculty, counselors, tutoring or outside agencies as appropriate;
• Communicate regularly and effectively with advisees through online technology and personal contacts;
• Perform other duties as assigned in relation to the grant's overall goals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
• Associate's Degree AND
• At least two years of experience in case management, counseling, and/or academic/career/financial advising; OR
• OR A combination of experience and training that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skills to perform the job will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree;
• Experience working successfully with a team;
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills and abilities;
• Experience teaching and/or experience facilitating or conducting workshops, seminars, presentations and meetings;
• Evidence of ability to work under pressure and prioritize competing demands;
• Experience in student advising, career guidance, educational planning and/or career services in a higher education setting;
• Demonstrated technology skills in online environments and data systems;
• Experience supporting a historically marginalized population.

Physical Work Environment:
The duties of this position are performed in an open office setting in an educational institution. This position interacts directly and frequently with faculty, staff, students and the general public. Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple tasks and prioritize competing demands. Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screens. Frequent oral and auditory communication with others.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Compensation & Work Schedule:
Effective July 1, 2019, salary is $4,202 per month ($50,424 annual). Work Schedule is generally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 40 hours per week. Position also receives sick, personal and vacation leave accruals, paid state holidays, and a Washington State insurance and retirement benefits package. Leave is per BTC leave grant policy 525.1. This position is not eligible for Washington State or BTC Tuition Waiver program.
