Bellingham Technical College is recruiting for a full-time, tenure track Engineering Technology Instructor. The position is anticipated to begin in January 2018.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop upper-level curriculum for the Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Technology (BASET) program; teach lower- and upper-division engineering and engineering technology courses; advise engineering technology students (including the admission process and graduation certification); and prepare for ABET accreditation.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish a successful and supportive learning environment for a diverse college student population with a wide-range of backgrounds and experiences. Instructors are responsible to plan, teach, and manage student learning in all assigned portions of the program including classroom and lab according to approved course study, state guidelines, program accreditation standards, and advisory committee recommendations.
The teaching schedule will vary based on student and college needs and is expected to include instructional strategies that use in-person, simulation, and online techniques. Instruction will include practical projects for students in addition to individual labs.
Position Duties & Responsibilities
The instructor will:
- Develop, plan, implement, and revise new and existing courses, curriculum, including 300 and 400 level engineering technology courses;
- Create learning activities that appropriately evaluate student progress toward attaining the learning outcomes and abilities set forth by the college and in established course outlines;
- Incorporate inclusive and effective teaching methods/styles that support successful learning appropriate to a diverse student population;
- Provide leadership in the BAS ET degree program;
- Follow the academic schedule as approved by the Dean; teach assigned courses at the times and dates specified by the academic schedule;
- Apply necessary components of math, human relations, computer skills, and communications in the technical curriculum;
- Provide timely and accurate assessment feedback to students; Plan, supervise, and evaluate students' progress;
- Maintain related student records, evaluations, and progress reports;
- Participate in program and campus events, community outreach activities, and student recruitment activities;
- Develop and maintain healthy and positive working relationships with students, staff, faculty and administration;
- Engage in scholarly and continuous improvement activities that complement and inform teaching;
- Actively participate in student academic advising;
- Effectively deliver, develop, revise, and teach classroom, lab and online curriculum in a team-oriented setting;
- Develop and maintain appropriate lab equipment and environment for training;
- Adapt to changing teaching schedules and situations (on campus, online, hybrid, etc.) as required by program;
- Develop and implement measures of program outcomes and effectiveness;
- Participate in program management;
- Keep current with industrial practices and technology;
- Effectively use computer applications where appropriate including learning management systems;
- Follow disciplinary procedures as prescribed and interact consistently and fairly with all students;
- Work with local industry representatives;
- Work with local, regional and national employers to facilitate job and internship opportunities;
- Consult with other College faculty and staff on issues relevant to student success;
- Participate in continuing professional development;
- Demonstrate and model professional work standards: conduct, work ethics, positive interpersonal skills, problem solving, teamwork within the college and department;
- Adhere and ensure compliance with applicable safety laws;
- Hold office hours;
- Serve on campus-wide committees;
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to Bellingham Technical College's Mission; contribute to college-wide goals and activities;
- Effectively perform other related duties, as assigned.
- A master's degree in engineering or a related technical field from an accredited institution;
- Two to five years of successful teaching experience at the collegiate level;
- Two to five years of industry experience in engineering or a related technical field;
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing);
- Demonstrated dedication to student success;
- Experience in writing and assessing student learning outcomes.
New instructors must complete industrial first aid/CPR and maintain vocational certification as required by the Washington State Law and Bellingham Technical College rules.
