JOB SUMMARY
Performs variety of work related to the operation and maintenance of the City's Wastewater Treatment Facility and sewer lift stations. Assignments may include technical or functional supervision of staff assigned to the wastewater treatment facility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform a variety of tasks related to the efficient operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Facility and sewer lift stations.
- Make recommendations to the Operations Manager and Lead Operator on budgets for the wastewater treatment facility.
- Represents the Wastewater Treatment Facility in meetings.
- Performs the collection of samples and the performance of the routine laboratory tests and analyses.
- Prepares reports for State and Federal Agencies and other reports as required for the wastewater treatment facility.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs at the wastewater treatment facility and sewer lift stations as necessary.
- Perform a variety of building maintenance and custodial duties in relation to wastewater treatment facility and sewer lift stations as necessary.
- Responsible for the safety and training of the wastewater treatment facility employee(s) as needed.
- Perform a variety of tasks related to the efficient operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility.
- Responsible for the proper handling and use of hazardous chemicals and precautions necessary for hazardous chemicals at the wastewater treatment facility.
- Responsible for public relations and educating the public by providing tours and answering questions at the wastewater treatment facility.
- Responsible for appropriate treatment and disposal of the wastewater treatment facility biosolids.
- Work with the lead operator for the ordering and purchasing of the wastewater treatment facility operating supplies.
This position is subject to standby status.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices necessary in the operation of a wastewater treatment facility and composting facility including the operation and maintenance of wastewater facility machinery, sewage pumping stations and biosolids composting facility machinery.
- Hazardous gases associated with treatment of sewage wastes.
- Automated equipment as applied to the wastewater treatment facility and compost facility operations.
- Wastewater treatment and compost facility operating policies and procedures.
- Management of wastewater treatment and compost facilities.
Ability to:
- Apply principles and practices necessary in the operation of a wastewater treatment facility, including the operation and maintenance of wastewater facility machinery, sewage pumping stations, and biosolids composting facility.
- Use tools necessary in making general repairs and adjustments to motors, pumps and other equipment in the wastewater treatment facility and sewage pumping stations.
- Read meters and gauges correctly and act quickly and competently.
Requires:
- Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions and preparation of reports for the wastewater treatment operations.
- Collection of samples and performing routine laboratory tests.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Working understanding of computers and software programs used in the operation of the wastewater operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Three (3) years experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Washington Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class "B" or must obtain within 12 months of employment in this position.
- Group II Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator certificate issued by the State of Washington. If the Treatment Facility classification is upgraded, then a proper operator's certificate shall be obtained.
- First-Aid/CPR Certification or must obtain within 12 months in this position.
- Traffic Control FlaggingCertification or must obtain within 6 months in this position
Preferred
- College degree preferred, or additional experience may be substituted for education requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Duties are performed indoors and outdoors during all types of weather.
- Walking for extended periods of time.
- Repeated bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
- Repeated climbing into and out of equipment.
- Working around sewage and biosolids on a day to day basis.
- Ability to lift 60 pounds without assistance
- Vision and hearing at level required to perform essential functions (may be corrected)
- Requires full range of motor skills and dexterity to operate hand held tools.

- Punctual and consistent attendance
- Possess a Washington Driver's License and maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.
