Mechanic/Maintenance, Water Distribution
The Town of La Conner Public Works Department has an immediate opening for a full time Mechanic/Maintenance, Water Distribution.

Essential functions of the job:
Essential responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Works unassisted or together with other employees as a team in maintenance and construction activities involving multiple tasks as assigned.
- Ensures the proper maintenance and record-keeping of town vehicles and equipment; reports unsafe or defective equipment to the Foreman or Director.
- Operates a variety of power tools, hand tools and construction equipment. Operates trucks, tractors and other equipment in the transport and removal of asphalt, sand, gravel and other debris as needed.
- Read water meters, cuts, lays, repairs, and taps, cleans and flushes water mains and drain lines, along with related activities such as manual excavation and backfilling.
- Accurately maintains records.
- Roadway maintenance such as pavement repairs, snow and ice removal, sanding, etc.
- Concrete construction, demolition and repair.
- Sandbag filling and placement during high water events.
- May be required to work weekends and on an on-call basis to complete emergency repairs.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of equipment, materials, methods and procedures involved in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
- Skills in safe operation of tools and equipment listed.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods as part of a team or individually.
- Ability to work safely.
- Ability to communicate effectively either verbally or in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to work in confined spaces or high places.
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions independently
Special Requirements:
* Current Washington State driver's license with class B CDL.
* Washington State DOH Water Works Operator Certification WDM 1 and able to obtain CCS.
* Considerable knowledge of potable water distribution operations.
* Must be able to obtain Traffic Control Flagger and first-aid/CPR card.
* Must be able to obtain a Genie Aerial trainers card.
* Knowledge of OSHA safety rules and work procedures.
* Familiar with applicable laws, codes, and permit requirements that govern public works
operations and maintenance activities.
Additional Examples of Work Performed:
- Cleans and maintains equipment, tools and town-owned facilities such as restrooms, parks and floats as well as other public buildings and spaces.
- Grounds maintenance, mows lawns in street right-of-ways and public spaces.
- Removes litter and other debris along town streets and parks.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Equipment utilized but not limited to motorized vehicles and equipment such as dump trucks, loader tractor, backhoe, plate and vibrator compactor, lawn mowers, chain saw, chop saw, jackhammer, pumps, compressors, sanders, sprayers, come-alongs and chain hoists, shovels, wrenches and miscellaneous other hand tools.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works outside in all weather conditions. - The employee works near moving machinery and mechanical parts, and is frequently exposed to wet/humid conditions.
- The employee occasionally works in elevated precarious positions, and may be exposed to vibrations, hazardous substances and toxic chemicals.
- The employee may occasionally be required to work in confined spaces and be exposed to high sound levels.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use the hand to finger, handle, feel, pull or manipulate and operate objects, tools and controls and be able to reach with the hands and arms in sometimes awkward and difficult positions.
- The employee is frequently required to stand and talk and hear.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand in one position or walk for extended distances and periods of time, sit, crouch, kneel, climb and balance, crawl and smell odors.
- The employee is frequently required to lift 25 pounds or more for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 80 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include peripheral vision, distance vision, close vision, depth perception, color recognition and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must be able to hear and discern variations in background noises such as backup alarms on construction vehicles.
Education & Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent, a minimum of 3 years experience with a public works department or equivalent construction and mechanical experience.
- Considerable knowledge of mechanical maintenance, repair and record keeping.
- Knowledge of accepted work procedures.
