JOB SUMMARY

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Biological Sciences seeks applicants for a full-time Laboratory Manager. The incumbent will provide hands-on supervisory and technical support, coordination, and day-to-day management for the undergraduate Biology (BIOL) 1000 laboratories. This position will supervise 5 lab technicians currently supporting BIOL 1002, 1007, 1008, and 1110.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the work of assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Sets work schedules and assigns to specific courses.
  • Works with course teaching assistants (TAs).
  • Works with departments and biological sciences coordinator to meet TA staffing needs (TAs are hired by departments, but their teaching assignments are with the BIOL 1000s).
  • Holds TA meetings to coordinate upcoming experiments and provide training in consultation and collaboration with the course instructor.
  • Works with departments to resolve TA problems (bringing problems to their department’s attention and providing feedback). 
  • Assists faculty in designing lab experiments. Develops and pre-tests lab experiments and analyzes procedures for intended results.
  • Assigns and coordinates the use of all lab equipment and supplies for all assigned courses.
  • Provides the course instructor with feedback about the effectiveness of lab experiments. Makes modifications as appropriate in consultation and collaboration with the course instructor.
  • Purchases and orders all laboratory equipment and supplies, processes necessary paperwork, and maintains appropriate records.
  • Prepares budget requests for supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains, monitors, and ensures proper security of laboratory equipment, oversees the maintenance of equipment, and performs minor repairs.
  • Develops and implements safety protocols consistent with EHS requirements.
  • Assists in administrative planning, development, and evaluation of policies and procedures.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Biological Sciences or a related field
  • 6 years of related experience
  • Demonstrated management experience
  • Breadth of knowledge across biological fields
  • Ability to engage, connect, and work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or related field
  • Experience in higher education

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time position. The University offers a competitive salary, outstanding benefits including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. Salary will be commensurate with successful candidate's background and experience. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
