Scope and Major Responsibilities
In concert with VELCO’s Safety Manager, the Security Specialist will ensure the safety of all employees and stakeholders the organization’s facilities and the security of all property and assets owned and operated by VELCO throughout the State of Vermont.
This position is responsible for developing and managing the security support structure for the company. Additionally, they will work on strategies and projects to advance VELCO’s mission as a Trusted Partner and express VELCO’s vision to create a sustainable Vermont through our people, assets, relationships and operating model. S/he will:
- Oversee the administration and management of VELCO’s contracted security staff and equipment. Assist contracted staff by providing leadership, training and support.
- Oversee security event investigations and response to events that impact the organization.
- Keep abreast of all security-related information, directives and events and take appropriate actions to ensure security staff are properly trained and equipped to manage potential issues or breaches.
- Maintain relationships and coordinate with local, state and federal law enforcement personnel and/or other officials on security related issues or events.
- Serve as the liaison with emergency responders; perform necessary trainings and facility walk through.
- Serve as resource for Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) physical security and participate in NERC CIP compliance audits to demonstrate compliance with federal physical security standards.
- Serve as subject matter expert for company security policies and procedures. Develop and/or provide updates and necessary modifications to company policies and procedures.
- Support the VELCO Safety Manager in the performance of safety inspections as well as conduct routine reviews to identity and address potential security concerns.
- Work with maintenance personnel to identify, document and assist, as needed, with repair of security equipment.
- Develop risk management assessments and participate in company emergency preparedness exercises.
- Assist in the creation and delivery of workplace and safety/security awareness training for employees and contractors.
- Respond to emergency calls, investigate incidents and conduct follow up review as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements
Degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management or related discipline is preferred. Demonstrated experience in security, law enforcement or public safety is highly desired, along with knowledge of federal and Vermont laws. ALICE-active shooter certification or the willing to obtain within short period is essential. Ideal candidate will offer effective communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. S/he must handle confidential matters with appropriate discretion.
