The Career and Academic Advisor will use knowledge and skills related to cultural competency to support students to create an environment where every person has an opportunity to reach his, her, or their full potential, and is valued for their unique qualities and contributions. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Veteran Services, the Advisor works with a variety of individuals and groups, while providing interactive customer service, developing and maintaining collaborative relationships inside and outside of the College. The Advisor considers and prioritizes student needs, proactively solves problems, and manages multiple projects simultaneously with high levels of accuracy. The Advisor will provide academic and career advising, short-term and long term degree planning, quarterly class enrollment support, and academic success strategies for our students who include veterans, service-members, and their eligible dependents. The Advisor must have the ability to adapt to changing mandates and procedures and achieve goals within or ahead of established time frames. Also critical to this position is the ability to explain complex processes and provide support for students to develop solutions to challenges.

- Identify educational benefits earned through military service.
- Assist student veterans with applying for and accessing Veterans Affairs education benefits.
- Be familiar with degree requirements at Whatcom Community College and communicate requirements to students.
- Assist student veterans with selecting a VA approved program of study and monitor the progress needed to complete the program of study.
- Increase the number of student veterans who graduate from Whatcom Community College.

Responsibilities and duties:
- Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement while appreciating the unique contribution of diverse individuals.
- Advise and assist students with the VA application process in person, phone, and email. Assist with enrollment verifications and certifications to the Department of Veteran Affairs, while reviewing VA enrollment and student academic records.
- Complete internal reviews to ensure that all necessary courses are certified correctly and VA payments are correctly applied.
- Assist with recruitment and selection of VA Work Study staff in the hiring process, assist in managing the daily activities of the Veteran Services Office, including VA Work Study staff, and assist in the training and scheduling of the VA Work Study staff.
- Understand, advise on and refer students to various funding opportunities including Ability to Benefit, FAFSA, and Workforce funding programs.
- Assist, guide, and empower students through the various processes and procedures of becoming a student.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Qualifications, Salary and Appointment

Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate's degree from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated experience with the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Prior military experience.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- This is a 12-month, full-time Administrative/Exempt position. It is exempt from Washington State civil service law with an annual salary based upon a range of $42,000-$46,000, depending on experience.
- The position comes with a full benefit package, including health, dental, life, long-term disability insurance and a retirement plan.
