Whatcom Community College invites applications for a Principal Accountant. The Principal Accountant is a vital member of the Business Office whose work to accurately report the financial position of Whatcom Community College is essential. The Principal Accountant provides leadership in the Business Office and is responsible to coordinate and direct financial transactions recorded in the accounting system of the College. This responsibility requires that the Principal Accountant be a strong communicator and service-oriented relative to the financial needs of all departments on campus while assuring adherence to college policies and procedures, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and rules established by the authoritative governing bodies.
This is a professional exempt staff position that reports directly to the Director for Business and Finance. The position serves on various college committees as needed and leads the Business Office in the director's absence. - Job Responsibilities

The Principal Accountant at Whatcom Community College will:
- Perform work functions related to accounting, auditing, financial reporting and other fiscal review and analysis for the College;
- Prepare annual Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) compliant financial statements, accompanying fiscal disclosures and management discussion and analysis (MD&A);
- Assist the Business and Finance Director in managing banking services and cash balances;
- Partner with staff in cashiering, accounts payable, and accounts receivable to ensure entries into the financial reporting system are timely and accurate;
- Assist in the development and documentation of fiscal procedures;
- Input, maintain and reconcile institutional assets, including land, buildings, equipment, inventories and infrastructures;
- Provide customer service and support related to budget, expense tracking, grant and financial reporting;
- Perform grant closeout functions required by grants and contracts administration and sponsors;
- Assist the Director for Business and Finance in the preparation of annual reports for specific stakeholders and authoritative bodies;
- Perform other duties as needed.
- Qualifications, Salary and Appointment

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in accounting, finance, business or related field, and two [2] years of relevant professional experience.
- Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Proven ability to research and implement Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) statements.
- Master's degree from an accredited institution in accounting, finance, business or related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA candidate.
- Professional experience in governmental accounting.
- Three (3) years of experience working in a diverse environment, inclusive of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, gender/sexuality and ethnic backgrounds and identities.
- Experience with grant management and compliance.
- This is a full-time administrative/exempt position, exempt from Washington State civil service law with an annual salary ranging $65,000-$70,000 depending on experience.
