Description:
The Able-Bodied Adult Without Dependents (ABAWD) Navigator position will create a single point of contact for immediate engagement of ABAWDs in activities that matter and fulfill the work requirement for Basic Food eligibility. This includes providing intake, assessment, referrals and support in accessing activities at community colleges or with other community partners. The Student Recruiter/Navigator for ABAWD assists students with program intake processes, choosing and scheduling courses, and degree and certificate planning consistent with short and long-term educational and career goals. The recruiter/navigator uses and teaches students to use the Starfish scheduling, communication and degree planning tool, and will provide appropriate referrals on and off campus to students/prospective students to ensure their success and determine basic food benefit eligibility. This position will also be responsible for documentation and tracking using the DSHS database as required by DSHS contracts, and will provide work participation verification assistance. The ABAWD Navigator will also work to enhance collaborations with community partners and increase resources for colleges to support low-income students. This exempt professional position reports to the Basic Food Employment and Training/Workforce Coordinator/Navigator.
Job Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide an intake process for ABAWDs that includes appropriate assessment and presentation of the full menu of options to meet work requirements and individualized career goals.
- Support all students' access to Basic Food assistance and the Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET) program, and support the reduction of student food insecurity.
- Manage an ABAWD tracking system to ensure accurate program data and reporting.
- Provide ABAWDs with referrals for supportive services with the college and community partners.
- Ensure ABAWDs are aware of their Work Participation Verification reporting requirements and provide assistance when appropriate.
- Ensure ABAWDs are provided with options for immediate engagement in Basic Education, Vocational Education, or other approved activities within the college or with community partners.
- Conduct regular check-ins with ABAWDs and support the BFET program with case management for increased enrollments when needed.
- Assist students in planning and scheduling of courses consistent with their academic goals, assessment/placement levels, and program guidelines.
- Explain certificate/degree requirements, processes for transferring in credits from previous institutions, and Transitional Learning options.
- Advise students through funding including federal, state and local grants.
- Guide students in the development of their educational plans to meet prerequisites, degree requirements and career preparation with advising tools such as Starfish.
- Provide students with information for making educational and career decisions including in-person and online resources.
- Identify post-program, career development, job search, transition, and retention support for students entering the workforce using Guided Pathways.
- Determine basic food eligibility, issue support services and provide work participation verification assistance.
- Monitor ABAWD student funding needs and collaborate across workforce funding programs to maximize funding across students' academic programs.
- Adapt to and learn appropriate advising/instructional technology tools and resources such as assisting students with accessing financial aid.
- Conduct ongoing review and updates to develop and expand accessible and American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant course/program materials.
- Engage in ongoing review to incorporate universal design in systems, processes and tools in support of ABAWD students.
- Analyze trends in access, retention and completion to identify success and problems in physical campus structures as well as processes and systems.
- Actively participate as a member of the statewide ABAWD Navigator Cohort, including attending virtual and in-person trainings and meetings.
- Contribute to the development of the statewide ABAWD Navigator model, including program processes and data tracking systems.
- Participate in ongoing program evaluation and revision efforts to ensure appropriate and effective supports for ABAWDs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Salary and Appointment
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associates (AA) degree from an accredited institution;
- At least one (1) year experience providing or receiving social services;
- At least two (2) years working in an office or educational environment;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution;
- Multi-lingual;
- Experience working with employment/career services and/or academic advising;
- Experience in social work/human services.

Adjunct Faculty Nursing Instructor

Whatcom Community College invites applications for part-time Adjunct Nursing instructors beginning Fall Quarter 2019. This is for two half-time positions and one quarter time position. The teaching assignments are generally Monday, Tuesday, and some Wednesdays and will include nursing laboratory and clinical teaching, and assisting with nursing simulation. WCC's nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and graduates of the program consistently exhibit nearly perfect NCLEX first attempt pass rates and job placement rates.
Qualifications, Salary and Appointment
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited institution (must be eligible for a waiver from the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission).
- Current unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in Washington or the ability to obtain license by September 2019.
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification.
- Three years current clinical (hospital) experience.

- Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
